IPO Takes Steps to Reduce Disputes Involving Trademarks and Domain Names
The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) submitted draft revisions to the Trademark Law in October 1999 in order to reduce the growing number of disputes involving Internet domain names and trademarks, as well as to facilitate the growth of electronic commerce. The IPO has also taken the following steps to address issues involving domain names and trademarks:
(a)Placing the draft revisions of the Trademark Law on the Internet and holding public hearings on the revisions in order to establish two-way communication with the public and promote the correct use of trademarks.
(b)Monitoring international developments and agreements regarding electronic commerce, such as dispute resolution, the scope of protection of famous trademarks, and the use of trademarks on the Internet.
(c)Initiating contact with the Directorate General of Telecommunications in order to understand how disputes regarding domain names are handled in Taiwan so that a mechanism to govern trademarks and domain names can be established.
