Statistics released on 1999 Patent Applications |
According to information released by the Intellectual Property Office, a total of 66,144 patent applications were received in 1999. Of this number, 55,193 were new patent applications, 8,226 were re-examination applications, 2,073 were opposition applications, and 652 were cancellation applications. The number of new applications in 1999 represented an increase of 1,522 cases over the previous year. Reexaminations increased 1,577 cases while oppositions increased 230 cases. Cancellations increased 14 cases. The total annual increase was 3,323 cases, or a growth of 5.3%. Examinations were completed on a total of 61,465 applications in 1999. This figure includes 50,280 new patent applications, 8,361 re-examination applications, 1,420 opposition applications, and 497 cancellation applications. There were a total of 907 dismissals and rejections in 1999. The number of completed examinations of new patent applications represented an increase of 8,282 applications over the figure of 41,998 from 1998. Completed re-examinations increased by 2,777 from 5,584, oppositions were 545 fewer than the 1,965 in 1998, while cancellations were 272 fewer than the 769 in 1998. Dismissals and rejections were 236 cases fewer than the 1,143 cases in 1998. The total annual increase of completed examinations was 10,006, or 19.4% greater than the previous year. The percentage of examinations completed stood at 92.9% of the applications received during 1999. |
