According to
statistics released by the Ministry of Justice, of 1,937 defendants in
copyright, trademark, and patent infringement cases in 1999, 762 persons
were sentenced to jail terms, received detention or were fined. Of the
defendants sentenced to jail terms, 536 persons were sentenced to less
than six months. Of these 536 persons, 59 were convicted of infringing
U.S.-owned intellectual property. Fifty-six persons were sentenced to no
less than six months but no more than one year, of which 12 were convicted
of infringing U.S.-owned intellectual property.Seventy-four persons were
sentenced to no less than one year but no more than two years, including
20 persons who were convicted of infringing U.S.-owned intellectual
property. Four persons were sentenced to no less than two years but no
more than three years, of which one person was convicted of infringing
U.S.-owned intellectual property. Sixty persons received detention,
including 3 persons who were convicted of infringing U.S. owned
intellectual property.
