According to data compiled by the Intellectual Prope-
rty Office, the United States, Australia, and United Kingdom have entered into agreements with Taiwan for reciprocal protection of microorganism inventions.Ten countries acknowledge a
reciprocal right of priority for patents filed in Taiwan, while six countries do the same for trademarks.

According to statistics released by the Anti-Counterfeiting Committee (ACC) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, during the period from January to March 2001, the ACC investigated 108 cases of susp-
ected counterfeiting (31 in January, 33 in February, and 44 in March) and 36 complaint cases (7 in January, 18 in February, and 11 in March). During this period, the ACC approved a total of 293 applications by police and investigators for rewards for anti-counterfeiting efforts, totaling NT$2,027,788.This consists of 76 applications in January totaling NT$646,552 (25 trademark, 2 patent, and 49 copyright cases), 82 applications in February totaling NT$463,690 (18 trademark and 64 copyright cases), and 135 applications in March totaling NT$917,546 (39

IPR Protection Work by National Police Administration in 1st Quarter 2001
According to statistics released by the National Police Administration (NPA) of the Ministry of Interior, during the period from January to March 2001, the NPA handled a total of 1,280 cases of alleged infringement of IPR (1,471 defendants). This consists of 197 cases of alleged trademark infringement involving 264 defendants (being 56 cases with 74 defendants in January, 55 cases with 86 defendants in February, and 86 cases with 104 defendants in March), 28 cases of patent infringement involving 37 defendants (being 10 cases with 12 defendants in January, 10 cases with 14 defendants in February, and 8 cases with 11 defe
ndants in March), and 1,055 cases of copyright infringement involving 1,170 defendants (being 277 cases with 306 defendants in January, 379 cases with 421 defendants in February, and 399 cases with 443 defendants in March).
During this period, 38 cases with 50 defendants involved infringement of foreignowned copyright (being 5 cases with 6 defendants in January, 15 cases with 22 defendants in February, and 18 cases with 22 defendants in March).Amongst these, 31 cases with 39 defendants involved infringement of U.S.owned copyright (being 3 cases with 3 defendants in January, 13 cases with 20 defendants in February, and 15 cases with 16 defendants in March).

Results of GIO Investigations of Video Rental Industry in 1st Quarter 2001
During the period from January to March 2001, the Government Information Office (GIO) and the local government agencies jointly conducted 225 investigations on MTV parlors (67 in January, 78 in February and 80 in March; 159 of these investigations were made after 8pm, being 47 in January, 58 in February, and 54 in March).They also conducted 789 investigations on video rental stores (226 in January, 278 in February, and 285 in March) and 184 investigations into other business establishments.As a result, the authorities seized 31,915 illegal video tapes (166 in January, 2,085 in February, and 29,664 in March), 48,265 laser disks (3,312 in January, 9,802 in February, and 35,
151 in March), as well as 1,799 videotapes whose licenses had expired (1,249 in February and 550 in March).58 cases were referred to the prosecutors for infringement and violation of public morals (being 15 cases in January, 11 in February, and 32 in March), while 43 were subject to administrative sanctions under the Broadcasting and Television Law (being 12 cases in January, 8 in February, and 23 in March).
During this period, based on the results of GIO investigations, the Film and Video Works Protection Foundation also referred 2 cases to the prosecutors' office in January for suspected copyright infringement.

GIO Uncovers 96 Violating Cable TV Operators in 1st Quarter 2001
During the period from January to March 2001, the Government Information Office (GIO) and local governm
ent agencies jointly conducted 509 investigations on cable TV operators (being 161 in January, 157 in Feb
ruary and 191 in March; 95 of these investigations were conducted after 8pm, being 35 in January, 31 in February and 29 in March). These investigations consisted of 167 investigations of primary broadcasting facilities (being 55 in January, 51 in February and 61 in March), uncovering 5 violations of rights protection regulations, and 1 violation each of advertising, fees and programming regulations; and 342 investigations of secondary broadcasting facilities (being 106 in January, 106 in February and 130 in March), uncovering 74 violations of advertising regulations, 14 violations of programming regulations, and 1 suspected rights infringement that was referred to the prosecutors' office.
In addition, the GIO handled 982 cases of consumer complaints (being 317 in January, 298 in February and 367 in March) regarding suspected violations of programming, advertising, fees and rights protection regulations. They are respectively 98 programming cas

AntiPiracy Work by the FVWP during 4th Quarter 2000
According to the statistics released by the Film and Video Works Protection Foundation (FVWP) concerning investigation, raids, and parallel importation, during the period from October to December 2000, the FVWP had handled 5 cases of parallel importation of genu
ine products referred by the Customs. The results of the investigations disclosed 4 cases of suspected lack of proper licensing.
During the same period, the FVWP also conducted 118 investigations on video rental stores, MTV parlors and LD exchange centers, as well as carried out 36 raids accompanied by the Government Information Office. As a result, a total of 27,935 cassettes, laser disks, VCDs and DVDs were seized.
The FVWP has also filed 53 suits in R.O.C. courts on behalf of member companies of the Motion Picture Association of America
(MPAA).

90 Persons Sentenced to 1+ Years Imprisonment in Affirmed IPR Cases in 1st Quarter 2001
According to statistical data released by the Ministry of Justice, during the period from January to March 2001, there were 733 defendants in affirmed cases of copyright, trademark or patent infringement heard by R.O.C. courts (212 defendants in January, 296 in February, and 225 in March). Amongst these, 489 were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment, detention or fines (being 148 defendants in January, 192 in February, and 149 in March). 302 defendants were sentenced to 6 months or less, being 80 in January (including 2 in U.S.related cases), 126 in February (including 7 in U.S.related cases), and 96 in March (including 3 in U.S.related cases). 37 defendants were sentenced to between 6 and 12 months, being 11 in January (including 1 U.S.related case), 12 in February (including 1 U.S.related case), and 14 in March (including 3 U.S.related cases). 90 defendants were sentenced to 1 year or more but less than 2 years, being 31 in January (including 2 U.S.related cases), 39 in February (including 1 U.S.related case), and 20 in March. 49 were sentenced to detention, being 22 in January, 11 in February, and 16 in March (including 2 U.S.related cases).
